What differentiates North and South Indian Cuisine? South Indian cuisine includes the cuisines found in the four southern states of India: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The similarities are the presence of rice as a staple food, the use of lentils and spices, the use of dried red chillies and fresh green chillies, coconut and native fruits and vegetables like tamarind, plantain, snake gourd, garlic, ginger, etc. Overall all the four cuisines have much in common and differ mostly in the spiciness of the food.

Here are few South Indian Specialties from Taj of Marin:

• Crab Dosa – crepe stuffed with Dungeness crab along with herbs and spices
• Dahi-Vada -  Lentil cakes soaked in yogurt and herbs

Our musician Brian Wallace plays his sarod live starting from around 6 PM up until closing. The sarod is a stringed musical instrument popular in Indian classical music.

Brian is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, composer, poet, entertainer and media artist. Not limited to Indian music, Brian also performs tropical, romantic, and original songs. He plays guitar, sarode, viola, flute, saxaphlute, and drum, with intriguing lyrics and eclectic world rhythmic and melodic styles.

Having graduated from Harvard University with a Summa Cum Laude thesis in English Literature, Brian has also studied with Maestro Ali Akbar Khan at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael.

On July 18, 2012 Taj of Marin will provide free catering to 65 students from Next Generation Scholars.

Next Generation Scholars is a San Rafael nonprofit that provides educational access to low-income students.
